Ian and Steve, the owners of La Cuccina are really passionate about healthy food.

Theirs is an ethical take on a self service restaurant which provides you with a casual and relaxed space to eat comfort food that you can relate to.

All food is prepared on the premises, only raw ingredients are purchased except for their bread which is outsourced.

Breakfast and lunch buffets are served daily from a large central serving area…and boy does the food on offer not only look great but tastes great as well.

You pay by weight:

Breakfast – R9.50 per 100g

Lunch       –  R16 per 100g

Meat eaters, vegetarians and gluten intolerant customers  are catered for with up to 20 dishes served at any one time.

There is also an a la carte breakfast menu.

All their fruit, veg and herbs are sourced from either organic food suppliers or from small local Hout Bay growers.

They even host a weekly food market downstairs  from their restaurant in the carpark on Saturday mornings as well as the first Friday night of the month.

A nifty way to ensure that your suppliers come to you!

All chicken, lamb, beef and eggs used are free range, hormone free and only fish from the green SASSI list is served.

All their coffee is organic and there is even a blackboard informing you what date the coffee was roasted.

They have a deli on site selling fresh organic produce which they will be upgrading soon.

A unique idea is their ‘take home’ concept whereby various dishes are prepared daily, onsite for take away with a meal for two including a bottle of wine costing just R100.

They also have an extensive catering facility.

All cleaning products and toiletries used are from Envirobiz which is an environmental and sustainability service provider.

Over 90% of their waste is recycled!

As part of their community service initiative they donate 10% of proceeds from the sale of the yummy Welsh Rarebit muffins and the entire selection of muesli’s, which are all made on site,(so order and eat to make a contribution) on the breakfast menu to the Bright Start organization.

Bright Start offer previously disadvantaged children a ‘brighter future’, by placing them in prominent local schools with proven excellent educational standards.

La Cuccina also host various charity events on their behalf.

Opening hours of the restaurant are :

  • Breakfast – 7.30am – 11.00am
  • Lunch       –  12.00pm – 17.00pm

Kitchen closes around 15.30pm depending on trade.

There is an outdoor terrace for those warm, sunny and (sometimes)wind free Hout Bay days.

All in all a wonderful local to spend some time at knowing that your well being and that of those less fortunate are high up on their list of priorities.

We will be offering two prizes for this restaurant to two of our readers…details coming up shortly!
