This family run, boutique organic wine estate is situated at one of the most prestigious and beautiful locations in the Western Cape winelands…right on the top of the Constantia valley at Constantia Nek. Silvermist Organic Vineyards is the only organically certified vineyards in the Constantia Valley and the views really are breathtaking, overlooking Longkloof Nature Reserve and the 12 Apostles on one side and the Constantia Valley with False Bay in the distance on the other.
Gregory Brink Louw, winemaker and viticulturist, spent the better part of 4 years in the early 2000’s clearing the alien vegetation by hand to make way for the organic vineyards, the restaurant and the Silvermist Mountain Lodge.
The Restaurant at Silvermist is situated in the perfect position to capture these awe inspiring 360′ views…a wonderful place to unwind, have a long, lazy lunch and savour their beautiful wines..
They are a relatively new vineyard with their 1st bottling only taking place in 2010…and what wines they are…
The Organic Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2014 being by far the best organic Sauvignon Blanc I have tasted in my quest to unearth all the organic wines from the Western Cape! The wine is packed full of complex subtle flavours of ripe figs, quince fruit and prominent lime, leaving a rich, creamy sensation in your mouth with an oh so long, clean finish. It has been rated 4 1/2 stars in the 2015 John Platter. Their Constantia Sauvignon Blanc is not far behind either…being a clean, structurede and more ready to drink wine with hints of lime, lemon leaf and subtle sweet melon flavours.
They also make very small quantities of red with their 1st bottling being a Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 and a 2011 blend of Cab and Shiraz called Rocketdog Red…both awarded 4 stars by JP.
Silvermist produces only a small volume of wines, thus each bottle is individually and consecutively numbered, in other words each bottle of Silvermist Wine is quite unique and very special.
An important part of the branding is the Rocketdog logo which is the name of the small, once stray, dog which is mascot of the estate and she rules over these vineyards overlooking this beautiful valley. Greg did not find Rocket…she found Greg. She walked in early one Christmas morning while Greg was drinking his tea and looking over the Ocean in Hermanus. He looked down and saw a dog sitting at his feet staring up at him. She was skinny with hardly any fur on her ears and tail… He immediately said: “Rocketdog, what are you you doing here?..” – He called her that because of her shape. She looked like a long rocket with her pointy nose… He bent over and gave Rocket a small piece of his rusk…and rather than aggressively grabbing it as a street dog usually would… She gently opened her mouth and just held the rusk between her teeth, staring up at Greg… From that point on there has been an incredible bond and understanding between the two of them. Wherever you’ll see Gregory, Rocket won’t be far behind, even if it’s an early coffee at Tashas Constantia, Rocket is always present. The Rocketdog logo sits atop the raw span tin cap on every wine they bottle and Greg swears that if this is scrunched flat and kept for posterity one will encounter good fortune in life just as Rocket did when he found Greg. A lovely story. I have kept the one from the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc we drank at the farm. One of many to come I am sure.
There is so much going on at this exciting vineyard with plans in the near future for…
- Expanding the vineyard 4-fold to include inter alia Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for a Cap Classique around 2017
- Expansion and upgrading of the Silvermist restaurant which is imminent.
- Negotiations are under way for a new, very prestigious hotel to be built as well as
- A new luxury Spa
Other attractions currently at the estate are:
- the new La Colombe Restaurant– when the original was about to close due to the sale of Uitsig, Greg the ever resourceful stepped in and offered them a place on the estate. It is now running full steam and bookings are being taken 3-4 months in advance!
- Silvermist Mountain Lodge which has 22 self catering lodges and suites
- One of the longest Zipline slides in South Africa… some over half a kilometre long and as high as 160m above the ground. This has got to be experienced to be believed.
Honestly one can arrive at the vineyard and quite happily spend the whole day exploring its many interesting offerings.
The workers on the farm were all found by some fortuitous circumstance and they are fiercely loyal and hard working because of this. I get the feeling that they would risk their lives for Greg.
To celebrate the launch of this new organic vineyard on Greggs Platter we are offering our readers a wonderful prize of a wine tasting for 2 on the estate plus on top of that they will receive a mixed 3 bottle case of wine from Silvermist after the tasting. This prize is valued at well over R500 so get entering now.
